A paradigm shift may be taking place regarding the framing of beverage alcohol consumption. The existing paradigm – which focuses on “harmful consumption” by a minority of problematic drinkers – is being recast to an alternate paradigm that argues there is “no safe level” or NSL for all consumers. Products that have traditionally been viewed as tonic are now being conceptualized as toxic and associated with preventable harms such as cancer and heart disease.

Hear from two international experts who will give an overview of how the international beverage alcohol community is answering the question of how alcohol is perceived in society, and what the sector should be doing about it.

Bennett Caplan has served as President of Abridge™ for over 15 years. He has worked in the alcohol beverage sector for thirty years – as a partner at the international law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery; an executive focusing on alcohol beverage matters at Seagram, Vivendi, and Allied-Domecq; and as head of FIVS, a global wine and spirits association.

Jim Trezise is President of WineAmerica, the Washington-based national association of American wineries with more than 400 members from 45 states, plus a State and Regional Associations Advisory Council for powerful national grassroots advocacy. He has been a winery association executive for over 40 years in New York and elsewhere, and was deeply involved in the 1990’s wine-and-health issue, including as Director of Communications for OIV’s Sub-Commission on Wine, Nutrition and Health, and of FIVS, both in pro bono capacities. He lives and works in New York’s Finger Lakes wine region, famous for Riesling.
